ORGANIZED LABOR: “NELDA HAS EARNED OUR SUPPORT!”
Austin’s Central Labor Council this weekend voted overwhelmingly to endorse Nelda Wells Spears in her re-election bid as Travis County Tax Collector, saying she has earned the support of working Texans by building the best tax office in the state.
“I’m deeply honored by Labor’s support,” Nelda said. “I was taught the union way by the late Mr. Earl Davis of the national Committee on Political Education, and my office continues to do its best to live up to the standards he and other leaders set for the workplace.”
The Central Labor Council vote follows on the heels of Nelda’s endorsement by the West Austin Democrats, one of the oldest and most respected Democratic clubs in Central Texas.
Under Nelda’s leadership, the Travis County Tax Office has achieved a record 99 percent tax collection rate — the best in Texas — while leading the fight against privatization efforts from private collection firms.
LABOR’S ENDORSEMENT A “REJECTION OF NEGATIVE CAMPAIGNS”
Nelda said the Central Labor Council proves that voters appreciate her steady leadership and refusal to politicize her office with the kinds of personal smears that have characterized her opponent’s campaign.
“Voters and taxpayers are right to reject negative campaigns,” Nelda said. “They know my record, they appreciate the job my staff and I are doing, and they deserve better than my opponent’s efforts to mislead them about the facts.”
