A Message From John Sharp and Nelda Wells Spears
Tomorrow’s Election Day, and we are writing with a simple request — please join us in voting for Proposition 15, the cancer research and prevention fund.
To find your polling place in Travis County, click here: http://www.co.travis.tx.us/county_clerk/election/20071106/polls.asp
Each of our lives has been touched by cancer, and we bet yours has, too. Each of us has also been entrusted with collecting the resources to pay for vital public programs.
So we know what we’re saying when we tell you this is a good deal. Texans spend $30 billion in direct and indirect costs fighting cancer every year. Prop. 15 will authorize one percent of that — $300 million a year — to try to reduce those costs and find a cure. The investment will attract the best minds to Texas and make us a national center for cutting-edge research. And because the state will get royalties on any new development, a single vaccine could more than pay the entire cost of this ballot initiative.
Prop. 15 is an important step toward restoring the momentum of cancer research and prevention programs that has been slowed by recent federal funding cuts. We have the chance to vote for a cure tomorrow, and we intend to seize the opportunity. We hope you will, too.
Sincerely,
JOHN SHARP & NELDA WELLS SPEARS
