Nelda’s Campaign Gets Off to Winning Start!
Nelda launched her re-election campaign last month with a strong statement of purpose:
“This is a big job, so let’s not waste any time on small talk,” she said. “Our public schools, public health, and public safety depend on a county tax collection operation that’s fair, steady, and non-partisan.”
The county’s top vote-getter last time she ran, Nelda has built the most successful county tax office in Texas, with a tax collection rate of more than 99 percent and a voter registration of nearly 95 percent in the last presidential election.
Nelda vowed to continue leading the fight against outside special interests who want to the county to privatize collection efforts — and divert millions of dollars in tax revenues from public services to private attorneys’ fees and commissions.
“I’m not neutral on this issue,” Nelda said. “Neutrality isn’t good enough when private law firms are trying to get their hands on scarce public resources.”
COMMUNITY LEADERS UNITE BEHIND NELDA!
Nelda’s flurry of endorsements from community leaders across Travis County impressed many but surprised few.
Former State Comptroller John Sharp, who knows something himself about what it takes to be a successful tax collector, says: “Nelda won my support the old-fashioned way — she earned it.”
Travis Co. Judge Sam Biscoe works closely with Nelda. “We need exactly the kind of balance and integrity Nelda brings to her job,” he says.
Sheriff Greg Hamilton agreed: “Nelda has steadily but surely built the state’s most effective local tax office, bringing in the revenues we need to fund law enforcement and other our vital services to keep our communities safe.”
